Tolson in US Amateur
UL sophomore Jack Tolson of Opelousas wrapped up stroke play Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur Championship being played at Pebble Beach and Spyglass in California.
Tolson had an opening-round 79 at Pebble Beach Monday, struggling early but playing the last six holes in even par, including a birdie at the par-four 13th hole. His Tuesday round did not begin until 2:45 p.m. (CDT) at Spyglass.
Tolson qualified for the country’s biggest amateur event in early July when he posted a 67-71—138 score on a rugged 36-hole day at East Ridge Country Club in Shreveport, one of the nearly 50 qualifying locations. That tied him for top honors in an event that had 72 participants vying for only two spots. Shreveport’s Carter Toms, son of David Toms, also shot 138 to claim the other qualifying spot, one stroke ahead of two other players.
Tolson has had a solid summer, finishing third in the LGA’s State Amateur and taking a top-25 finish in the prestigious Southern Amateur prior to qualifying for the U.S. Amateur.
Oakbourne Country Club will host the UL baseball team’s annual fundraiser tournament in just over one month on Monday, Sept. 24. The four-person scramble, sponsored by HomeBank and Wells Fargo Advisors, will have a noon registration and a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
The $250 entry fee includes Adidas apparel and a Ragin’ Cajun hat and shirt along with lunch and other food and beverages, prizes on all par-threes and prizes to the top three teams. Team entry fee of $1,000 includes mulligans and other course extras, and sponsorships are available from $200 to $,3500 with the top sponsorships including a four-person team entry.
