Baseball: Ragin’ Cajuns Come Up Short Against UT Arlington In Extra Innings
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team came up short 4-2 in 10 innings against UT Arlington on Sunday in the series finale at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
The Ragin' Cajuns (15-17, 5-7 SBC) are now 2-2 in extra innings games this season. The Cajuns outhit the Mavs (15-15, 7-5 SBC) 9-8 in the contest.
Senior reliever Dylan Moore was handed the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) without recording an out in the tenth inning. Daniel James claimed the win for the Mavericks tossing 3.0 scoreless innings in relief with one hit, two walks and four strikeouts.
LEADING THE CAJUNS
Junior Daniel Lahare had a career day going 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Lahare is the first player to post four hits in a game for Louisiana since Todd Lott had four at Sam Houston State on Feb. 24, 2017. Freshman Hayden Cantrelle reached three times in the game going 2-for-4 and was hit by a pitch.
Brock Batty and Logan Stoelke combined to toss 4.1 scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UT Arlington scored first in the top of the second on a Boone Montgomery RBI single through the right side of the infield to take a 1-0 lead.
The Cajuns pulled even at 1-all in the bottom half of the second when Hunter Kasuls came home to score on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Kennon Fontenot.
Lahare gave Louisiana a 2-1 advantage in the next inning driving a double into the gap in left center to plate Kole McKinnon from first base.
The Mavericks didn't take long to answer though as Josh Minjarez sent a solo home run over the fence in left field with two outs to knot the game at 2-2.
UTA threatened in the top of the eighth putting runners on second and third with no outs. Stoelke came into the game and induced a Christian Hollie groundout to second base and an Omar Salinas pop out to third base before getting Noah Vaughan to ground back to him to end the inning unscathed.
In the top of the tenth inning, Salinas brought home Minjarez on a sac fly to centefield with the bases loaded and no outs to give UT Arlington a 3-2 edge. The Mavs tacked on a run later in the inning as Hollie score on an error by Cantrelle to make the final 4-2.
Louisiana continues its home stand on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. as the Ragin' Cajuns host McNeese in a non-conference game at Russo Park. The Cajuns close out their five-game homestand on Wednesday against Southeastern Louisiana with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
