Baseball: Cajuns Drop Series Opener In Extra Innings To Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team came up short in 12 innings on Thursday night falling to Arkansas State 8-7 in the series opener at Tomlinson Stadium.

Reliever Grant Cox suffered the loss for the Cajuns (11-14, 2-5 SBC) after giving up a run without recording an out in the 12th inning. Louisiana was outhit 16-10 in the game.

Bo Ritter claimed the victory for A-State (10-12, 2-5 SBC) tossing 2.2 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

LEADING THE CAJUNS

Junior Hunter Kasuls led the Ragin' Cajuns at the plate going 3-for-6 with a double, triple and a career-best four RBI, while junior Gavin Bourgeois drove in a run and had two doubles on the night. Freshman Hayden Cantrelle increased his hit streak to nine games with a double in the eighth inning.

Starter Jack Burk notched a quality start in a no decision as he limited the Red Wolves to three runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings with three walks and three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Arkansas State grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out, two run single up the middle by Cullen Ray.

Louisiana quickly answered in the top of the third as Kasuls doubled to right center with two outs to bring home a pair of runs and even the contest at 2-all.

The Ragin' Cajuns went in front 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Kasuls tripled to left center to plate Bourgeois who doubled to lead off the inning. In the next at bat, Kennon Fontenot tripled to right centerfield to extend the Cajuns edge to 4-2. Cantrelle brought home the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 5-2.

After a scoreless inning, the Red Wolves cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff solo home run down the left field line by Winston Welch. Welch added another run in the bottom of the eighth to pull A-State within a run at 5-4 on a RBI double down the left field line.

Louisiana got two runs back in the top of the ninth on an RBI double to left center by Bourgeois and an RBI single through the right side of the infield by Kasuls to extend the lead to 7-4.

Arkansas State rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 7-all on an RBI double by Kyle MacDonald, an RBI single by Tobias Johnson and a sac fly by Andrew Leggo.

The Cajuns threatened in the top of the 10th inning putting a runner on third base with one out, but Zach LaFleur was caught off of third on a missed squeeze bunt by Kole McKinnon to end the threat.

In the bottom of the 12th, Cox hit Caleb Squire with the bases loaded and no outs to give Arkansas State the 8-7 victory.

UP NEXT

The Ragin' Cajuns and Red Wolves return to action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. with game two of the series at Tomlinson Stadium. Junior right-hander Nick Lee will take the bump for Louisiana, while Arkansas State will counter with junior right-hander Nate Alberius.
