Softball: 20th-Ranked Ragin' Cajuns Capture Series Win at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – 20th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball claimed its Sun Belt Conference opening series with a 4-2 victory over Coastal Carolina in the rubber game of the weekend set on Sunday at CCU Softball Stadium.
Louisiana (14-6, 2-1 Sun Belt) responded from a first-inning tally from Coastal Carolina (14-10, 1-2 Sun Belt) by pushing across a pair of runs in the second inning to claim the lead for good.
The Ragin' Cajuns manufactured a run in the fifth inning, initiated by a two-base sacrifice bunt, and Casidy Chaumont put the final touches on the win with a solo homer in the sixth inning.
Louisiana picked up its 38th consecutive Sun Belt Conference series victory dating back to March 2013.
Casey Dixon was in control in the pitching circle, carrying a one-hitter into the fifth inning and holding the Chanticleers to three hits. Aside from two solo homers allowed, the only hit she yielded was a two-out single in the fifth inning.
Six hitters paced the Ragin' Cajuns eight-hit attack led by Kara Gremillion and Kelli Martinez who both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Aeriyl Mass picked up her team-leading third RBI of the series on a fielder's choice grounder that brought home Louisiana's first run in the second inning.
Alissa Dalton executed the sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning which moved Gremillion to third base and set up Lexie Comeaux's sacrifice fly that increased the lead to 3-1.
Chaumont's homer led off the sixth inning and provided extra cushion for Dixon. It was the freshman's team-leading fourth home run of the season.
Louisiana quickly responded after Coastal Carolina received a solo home run from Courtney Dean in the bottom of the first. Jolie Readeaux led off the second inning with a single, moved to third on wild pitches and scored when Mass slapped the ball to shortstop.
Mass stole second and put the Ragin' Cajuns in the lead after a misplay following the catch of a foul pop up down the left field line.
Dixon continued a string of what would be 11 out of 12 Chanticleers retired until the two-out single in the bottom of the fifth to preserve the lead.
Gremillion laid down a bunt single to start the fifth inning, then raced over to third base on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt from Dalton. She scored on Comeaux's sacrifice fly as Louisiana broke through after missing a pair of opportunities to push across a run in the fourth inning (batted called out of box, over-the-shoulder catch on would-be single).
Chaumont's home run in the sixth inning increased the lead to 4-1. Dixon seemed unphased by Coastal's answer in the bottom half as she promptly retired the final four batters she faced in the game.
No. 20 Louisiana returns to Lamson Park for a series of four games that begins Thursday with a 6 p.m. single game against FIU.
Over the weekend, the Ragin' Cajuns play their Sun Belt home opening series as Appalachian State visits for the Saturday-Sunday series.
