Softball: Ragin' Cajuns Split Sun Belt-Opening Doubleheader at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – 20th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball and Coastal Carolina split a doubleheader on Saturday in their Sun Belt Conference opening series, as both teams claimed a 4-2 victory.
Louisiana (13-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) pushed across three runs in the sixth inning to rally for the win in the opening game. It marked the squad's seventh come-from-behind win of the season.
In the nightcap, it was Coastal Carolina (14-9, 1-1 Sun Belt) plating three runs over its final two at bats to break a tie and holding off a Ragin' Cajuns push in the seventh inning.
Saturday's doubleheader marked the first-ever contests between the two programs at CCU Softball Stadium.
Beth Ashley went 2-for-3 at the plate, leading the Ragin' Cajuns in hits and posting her sixth multiple-hit game of the season.
Lexie Comeaux provided the game-winning run when her sixth inning double down the left field line snapped a 2-all tie. Aeriyl Mass brought home an insurance run with a sacrifice fly for her team-leading second RBI of the contest.
Carrie Boswell closed the game for the Ragin' Cajuns pitching staff with 2-2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in her Sun Belt Conference debut.
Louisiana's sixth inning rally started with Casidy Chaumont drawing a leadoff walk and moving to third base on an Ashley single. A wild pitch from Coastal's Kaitlin Beasley-Polko allowed Chaumont to score and even the score at 2-2, then Comeaux's double and Mass' sac fly pulled the Ragin' Cajuns ahead 4-2.
Key defensive plays by Kara Gremillion and Alissa Dalton prevented Coastal from gaining hits and attempting an answer in the bottom of the sixth. Boswell worked around a two-out error in the seventh inning to close out the game.
Gremillion (2-for-2, double, RBI) and Mass (2-for-3) both produced two-hit outings for Louisiana which out-hit Coastal Carolina 6-5.
Casey Dixon started in the circle and limited the Chanticleers to three hits in 4-2/3 innings. A pair of solo home runs hit by Coastal's Alexis Alvino prevented her from a victorious SBC debut.
The Ragin' Cajuns took a 1-0 lead off a Gremillion RBI single in the third inning, but the first of Alvino's solo homers knotted the score in the bottom half. Her second one put the hosts in the lead in the fifth inning.
Trailing 4-1 after Coastal added a solo home run and sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, the Ragin' Cajuns three slap hitters all reached base to start the top of the seventh inning.
Brittany Rodriguez scored on a Dalton grounder up the middle, then Gremillion was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Beasley-Polko, pitching in relief, would induce a double play ball to third base to end the Louisiana rally.
Louisiana and Coastal Carolina play the rubber game of the three-game Sun Belt series on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CDT).
Fans can hear the game on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM in the Acadiana region and worldwide on the ESPN 1420 app. Live video will be available through Chanticleer Sports Network.
