U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise will throw out the first pitch for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette at Friday's baseball home opener.

UL will play Wright State at 6:30 p.m. at Russo Park.

Scalise,  a Republican from Jefferson Parish,  was wearing a UL jersey when he was wounded during a shooting at a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game in Virginia in June.  Scalise was one of five people shot during the practice.  Capitol Police killed the gunman.

The team will present Scalise with a new jersey at the game.

The 20th-ranked Cajuns will play three games this weekend at the recently completed M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, while first pitch of the series finale is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The first 1,500 fans in attendance Friday will receive a free Ragin’ Cajuns mini bat in honor of the 2018 home opener. There will also be a fireworks show after the completion of the first game.
