Women's Tennis: Picaut's Clincher Seals The Deal As Cajuns Hold Off TAMCC

David Collins, Athletics Communications Assistant

Louisiana improved to 7-1 at Cajun Courts, 8-3 on the season, with a win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders.

Floriane Picaut

LAFAYETTE – Thanks to freshman Floriane Picaut's hard fought three-set clinching win at No. 2 singles, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team snagged their eighth win of the season, to improve their record to 8-3, with a 4-3 win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Thursday night under the lights at Cajun Courts.

The win home improves their home record to 7-1 and it's the first time the Cajuns have beaten the Islanders since Feb. 18, 2010 and it evens out the Islanders record at 3-3.

Picaut got a win at doubles with her freshman partner Dana Radovanovic and seniors Abby Johnson and Elena Sava got themselves a win in doubles to give the Cajuns the doubles point.  While in singles senior Kelly Drew and Radovanovic joined Picaut in giving the Cajuns the three wins they needed in singles to come away with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Louisiana took the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2, and it started with a 6-1 win from Johnson and Sava at the top when they took down the Islander duo of Dormet/Boscher.  While Picaut/Radovanovic sealed the deal for the Cajuns in doubles at No. 2 when they held off the Islander pairing of Vicens and Trigona to win 6-4 and give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Drew, playing her customary spot at No. 1, gave the Cajuns a 2-0 lead when she took down TAMCC's Hortense Boscher in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 and Radovanovic put the Cajuns a win away at No. 4 when she took down TAMCC's Louise Trigona 6-4, 6-2.

From there things began to get dicey for the Cajuns, and they dropped the next three matches to allow the Islanders to climb back into the match and it started at No. 6 when TAMCC's Marina Vicens Miquel beat the Cajuns Morgan Forshag 6-3, 6-4 to make it 3-1.

Then at No. 5 TAMCC got another win when Louisiana's Marina Rodriguez Garcia lost to Carolina Bulatovic, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.  Garcia didn't let the first set loss get her out of her game, as she fought back in the second set to force the third set showdown.  But she couldn't hold off Bulatovic in the final set as the Islanders moved the score to 3-2 with the Cajuns still holding on.

At No. 3 the Islanders tied things up when Luna Dormet won the final two sets, after dropping her first set, to beat the Louisiana's Sava, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-1.  It tied the team score up at three-all and it set up a showdown at the final match still being competed, which was a three-set battle at No. 2.

Picaut, sensing the momentum turning on the Cajuns halfway through her second set, dug deep in the third set to bounce back from dropping that second set to win against TAMCC's Jelena Dzinic, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.  Her grit was on full display to hold off the charging Dzinic and she made sure the Cajuns wouldn't let the match slip away as she clinched things for Louisiana to help them defend Cajun Courts.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana returns to the friendly confines of Cajun Courts on Sunday, Feb. 25, when they welcome the Southern Miss. Eagles with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m.
