Baseball: Louisiana Falls To Texas In Season Opener, 3-0
AUSTIN, Texas – The 18th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team fell to 14th-ranked Texas 3-0 in the 2018 season opener on Friday night at UFCU Disch-Faulk Field.
Louisiana (0-1) was outhit 6-3 in the contest by the Longhorns (0-1) as both teams played an error free game.
Sophomore Jack Burk was handed the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits in four innings of work. Texas starter Nolan Kingham earned the victory tossing eight shutout innings with 10 strikeouts, while Beau Ridgeway picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning in relief.
LEADING THE CAJUNS
Junior transfer Gavin Bourgeois posted a 2-for-4 night at the plate with a pair of singles and a stolen base. Senior Tyler Stover had the other hit in the game for Louisiana with a double in the second inning.
Senior left-hander Colten Schmidt was outstanding in relief limiting the Longhorns to one run on two hits in four innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Texas got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout to third base by right fielder Austin Todd to take a 1-0 lead. The Longhorns added a run in the fifth on an RBI single to right field by third baseman Kody Clemens to make the score 2-0.
Todd brought home the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out double to left field to make the final 3-0.
The Ragin' Cajuns and Longhorns return to action tomorrow in game two of the series at UFCU Disch-Faulk Field. Junior right-hander Nick Lee will make the start for Louisiana, while Texas will counter with junior right-hander Chase Shugart. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m. and fans can watch the game live on the Longhorn Network or listen on KPEL 96.5-FM.
