Softball: No. 22 Louisiana Closes Out Undefeated Season-Opening Weekend
BROUSSARD – No. 22 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball picked up a pair of wins on Sunday at the Broussard Sports Complex to close out the Mardi Gras Classic and wrap up an undefeated season-opening weekend.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-0) outlasted Eastern Illinois 14-10 in nine innings in the resumption of Saturday's game at Lamson Park that was suspended by rain.
The squad followed up with a run-rule triumph over Iowa that saw Kylee Jo Trahan toss a one-hit shutout in the 9-0 (5 inn.) affair.
Louisiana's offense produced 18 runs off 21 hits on the day. Alissa Dalton was a key contributor, collecting six hits highlighted by a three-hit performance against Iowa that generated three RBI.
In the pitching circle, Trahan factored into both decisions as she hurled two scoreless frame in extra innings to close out the EIU contest and zipped through the Iowa lineup in the day's finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. EASTERN ILLINOIS
- Louisiana broke open a one-run contest in the sixth inning taking advantage of EIU miscues to plate four runs and forge ahead 9-4. The Panthers stayed alive when a double from Haley Mitchell resulted in the bases being cleared and the scored tied 10-10.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Ragin' Cajuns utilized a two-out rally in the ninth to capture the win. It started with Brittany Rodriguez shoving an infield single to shortstop to load the bases, then Jolie Readeaux and Dalton followed with back-to-back, two-run singles.
Trahan retired EIU in order in the ninth inning, completing a relief effort in which she sat down six of the seven batters faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. IOWA
- Louisiana wasted no time in jumping ahead of the Hawkeyes as Beth Ashley delivered a two-run triple in the top of the first and later scored for a 3-0 advantage.
Dalton's first home run in a Cajuns uniform was a solo shot that added to the lead in the third inning, the Louisiana put Iowa away in the fourth inning with two-run singles from Dalton and Ashley being the final blows extending the advantage to 8-0.
Dalton (3-for-3, 3 RBI) and Ashley (2-for-3, 4 RBI) powered the Ragin' Cajuns offense with a combined seven RBI.
Trahan was never threatened as none of the Hawkeyes three baserunners reached second base. She faced only three over the minimum and threw just 58 pitches on the way to posting the pitching staff's first shutout of the season.
No. 22 Louisiana returns to Lamson Park on Thursday, Feb. 15 for a 6 p.m. single game with Oregon State. Then over the weekend, the Ragin' Cajuns battle No. 2 Florida in a three-game weekend series that begins with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 17.
