Women's Tennis: Ragin' Cajuns Finish Off Win At Incarnate Word

Story LinksSAN ANTONIO – It took an entire weekend, with a round trip to College Station, Texas sandwiched in-between, but the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team wrapped up what they had started on Friday, Feb. 9, with a commanding 4-0 win over the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Sunday at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center.
The match had begun on Friday, Feb. 9, and the Cajuns had taken the doubles point before weather sidetracked the Cajuns from winning the day. Per ITA rules if a match can be restarted and completed within 48 hours, then that doubles point can be kept without having to start from zero.
After Louisiana's trip to Texas A&M, on Saturday, Feb. 10, the Cajuns returned to Incarnate Word and the win they earned improved their record to 7-2 on the season as the continue the best start they've had in over a decade.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): The Cajuns had to work to earn the doubles point, and they did just that beginning and finishing off the big-time comeback to put themselves up a point before play was halted. After losing the first match at No. 2, when the freshmen duo of Floriane Picaut and Dana Radovanovic lost in a close one, 7-5, to the Cardinal's pair of Djurdjevic/Sadiq, Louisiana set off on the comeback trail.
It started at No. 1, when the senior duo of Abby Johnson and Elena Sava kept the Cajuns alive in a tiebreaker, beating Incarnate Word's duo of Zemunik and Kareh 7-6 (7-1) to get the Cajuns their first win of the day. It was at No. 3 that the Cajuns finished things off at doubles when senior Kelly Drew and sophomore Marina Rodriguez Garcia held off Incarnate Word's Dordan and Tamayo to win 7-6 (8-6).
Louisiana's pair had to dig deep as things started to get slightly wet on the court, and the match began to get tighter and tighter. But the two Cajuns, who have played well together this season, worked together to wrap up the doubles point for the Cajuns as play was suspended until Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Louisiana hurried back from College Station, to get back to their 1-0 lead at Incarnate Word and almost immediately it was evident that the Cajuns weren't going to let all that travel go to waste. Garcia got the Cajuns their first win with a straight set win, at No. 5, over Alejandra Tamayo, 6-0, 6-2 and that was followed up by Picaut's straight set battle, at No. 3, where she had to hold off the Cardinals' Victoria Kareh with strong finishes to both sets to win, 6-4, 6-3.
With the score sitting at 3-0, Sava clinched things at No. 4 with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Sara Djurdjevic. While the second set was a bit easier for the Cajuns senior, she had to fight hard in the first set to take that advantage into the final set. But she dug deep in that first set and made sure her hard work paid off in a straight set win that gave the Cajuns a 4-0 win of the Cardinals.
UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana returns home to Lafayette, and they'll play their next five matches on the friendly confines of Cajun Courts, starting with a doubleheader against Jackson State on Saturday, Feb. 17.
