Women's Tennis: Cajuns Finish Fifth At George E. Fourmaux Invite

HAMMOND, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team finished fifth at the 2017 George E. Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational, beating Nicholls, 3-2, in the fifth-place match to finish the weekend off on a high note.

Louisiana went 2-2 over the weekend playing in four matches.  They lost to Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, Nov. 3 on the first day (4-1), before coming back on the second day, Saturday, Nov. 4, splitting their two matches on that day.

They started the day off with a 4-1 win over Alcorn State, before dropping their second match 4-1 to McNeese to finish their day and place them in the fifth-place match that they won today.

HOW IT HAPPEEND (Singles): Louisiana got two wins in their singles that helped them scratch out the overall victory in the match.

Cajuns sophomore Marina Rodriguez Garcia won her second match of the weekend, taking down Marina Vigil in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.  In the second set Vigil attempted to get into the match but Garcia didn't let her get anywhere near forcing a third set breaker winning the match comfortably.

Freshman Floriane Picaut won her first match of the weekend, defeating Lingfeng Gu in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in a match that the young Cajuns woman dominated from start to finish.

Louisiana senior Abby Johnson fought hard in her match but in the end, she fell in three sets to Mariia Kozachock, 3-6, 6-2, 10-6.  Johnson came out strong to take the first set, but Kozachock shut down the Cajuns senior in the next two sets to take the second and third set tiebreaker for the match win.

Senior Kelly Drew dropped her match in straight sets to Stephanie Barnett, 6-4, 7-5, to put the Cajuns in a situation where they needed to win the one doubles match that was played between the two schools.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Louisiana needed to get the doubles match to take the overall match since the score was tied at two apiece.  The Cajuns did just that to come away with the fifth-place finish.

Senior Elena Sava and freshman Dana Radovanovic teamed up for straight set win, 6-0, 6-4, over the Nicholls' duo of Anastasia Kuzevanova and Changwei Wei to finish off the Cajuns victory and it gave Louisiana a positive finish to a good weekend.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: The tournament concludes the Cajuns fall season and they'll begin to prep for their spring season which starts at the end of Jan. 2018.
