Women's Basketball: Goodwin's 14 Second Half Points Help Cajuns Beat XULA
LAFAYETTE – Freshman Skyler Goodwin scored 14 second half points to help the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team come back from a two point halftime deficit to win 59-50 against the Xavier Unviersity of Louisiana Gold Nuggets in their final exhibition game here at the Cajundome.
Senior Simone Fields finished with a double-double (12 points and 11 rebounds) while freshman Ty'Reonne Doucet lead the Cajuns in scoring with 15 points to help Louisiana get the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED (First Quarter): The Cajuns came out and set the tone defensively for the game, forcing two turnovers within the first two and a half minutes as they opened the game on the press and stayed with it for most of the game.
Both teams struggled to get going offensively through the quarter, but the Cajuns did get ahead halfway through the period after sophomore Brittney Myles' free throw at the 4:52 mark made it 9-4 Cajuns.
But Xavier stayed with the Cajuns nailing a layup and forcing a turnover that gave them a fast break basket to make it 9-8, with the Cajuns still in the lead.
Xavier then crashed the board getting three rebounds before Cajuns sophomore Malachi-Seraphin Williams caused a turnover that lead to Fields putting in a layup with 1:37 left in the quarter and the Cajuns ahead 11-8.
Louisiana couldn't add to their lead and with 29 seconds left Xavier nailed a three-pointer that put the score at 11-11 when the horn blew to end the first quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Quarter): Both teams shot under 40 percent in the first quarter as the defense on both ends was tough, but the Cajuns maintained their press and kept Xavier off the board for the first three minutes of the half.
Louisiana took the lead on a Doucet layup at the 8:26 mark, but a Cajuns turnover lead to Xavier's first basket of the quarter at 6:57 which tied the game at 13-13.
Xavier and Louisiana then went into a joint scoring drought for just over two minutes which was broken by a jump shot from Xavier that gave them a 15-13 lead. The Cajuns scoring drought, the longest of the game for Louisiana, ended after it went slightly over four minutes with another Doucet layup that tied the score at 15-15.
The Cajuns press was again a force as they forced Xavier to commit three turnovers over their next three possessions and Louisiana took advantage going ahead 18-15 with under three minutes to go.
But Xavier didn't go away quietly and they scored twice in the final two minutes to take a 22-20 lead into the halftime break.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Third Quarter): The poor shooting continued for both squads as the second half began, but the Cajuns defense had a lot to do with that. Myles, a force down low for the Cajuns all game long, blocked two Gold Nuggets' shots in the first two minutes of the half.
Senior Troi Swain gave the Cajuns their first basket of the half at 7:58 to tie the game at 22-22 and it was answered quickly by a Xavier three-pointer to give them the lead.
At this point, Goodwin took control of the game, and she nailed two quick back-to-back baskets, one from beyond the arc and the other just inside, in a 30 second time frame to give Louisiana the 27-25 lead halfway through the quarter.
Both teams again went through a several minute scoring drought, but the Cajuns maintained their dominance on the boards out rebounding Xavier five to three from the 6:25 mark until the 4:45 mark when Xavier tied it up with a jumper placing the score at 27-27.
Goodwin again came up big with a defensive rebound that she turned into a basket of her own at the 3:22 mark to put Louisiana up 31-27.
Doucet scored the next two baskets for the Cajuns, the last at the 1:27 mark, to put the Cajuns ahead 35-34. The Cajuns never gave that lead back for the remained of the game and the quarter ended with Louisiana up 40-36.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Fourth Quarter): For the first five minutes of the final period the Cajuns and the Gold Nuggets traded possessions and scoring with Louisiana holding onto the lead through it all.
Louisiana kept their lead thanks to red-shirt freshman Danyale Bayonne snapping her cold shooting streak, making the first two baskets of her day at the 8:14 and 6:36 marks the second putting the Cajuns up 44-41.
Xavier did tie the score at 5:46 but from there, the Cajuns pulled away and left the Gold Nuggets in the dust. Goodwin and Fields took control of things for the Cajuns, as a three-pointer from Goodwin at the 4:56 mark broke the tie and a lay-up from Fields shortly after gave the Cajuns a five-point lead.
At 3:34 Doucet finished off her perfect shooting afternoon, with a basket and it put the score at 53-46 for Louisiana. But down the stretch the Cajuns didn't fold and one more basket from Goodwin and two more from Fields helped put away Xavier for good as the Cajuns won the game with a 59-50 final score.
NOTEWORTHY: Three Cajuns finished in double digit scoring, with Fields, Goodwin and Doucet all scoring in double digits; Goodwin had nine rebounds to go along with her 14 second half points; Swain moved the ball well finishing with three assists and Bayonne had three assists as well.
