Men's Tennis: Cajuns Finish Up Strong Weekend At Southern Miss. Invite
HATTIESBURG, MISS. – Sophomore Pearse Dolan had a singles win and a doubles win as the Louisiana men's tennis team wrapped up the final day of the Southern Miss. Invitational.
Louisiana's pairing of senior Vlad Kramarov and freshman Nico Sojka added to the Cajuns good finish to the weekend with two wins for the Cajuns on the day in their two doubles matches.
The Cajuns yet again played in a dual-meet format, but today they played in two doubles matches and only one singles match. In singles they took on Southern Miss., while in doubles they faced off against the University of Alabama Birmingham and a pairing of South Alabama and the University of William Carey.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles vs. USM): Dolan slotted in the third singles position and he took on USM's Daniel Merker. In straight sets Dolan, easily dispatched Merker 6-1, 6-3 to give the Cajuns a win on the day.
For Dolan, it was his second win of the weekend, giving the sophomore a great two days spent at Southern Miss.
At No. 2 was junior Arthur Libaud, and he fell to USM's Teeradon Tortrakul in a three-set marathon 4-6, 6-1, 10-4. Libaud came out and jumped on Tortrakul in the first set, but Tortrakul came out and took the second set 6-1. In the third set tiebreaker Tortrakul pulled away and finished off Libaud, 10-4.
At the fourth spot senior Vlad Kramarov lost in another three-set exhibition to Wen-Po Tseng 6-1, 3-6, 10-0. After losing the first set, Kramarov made sure to some out and play the second set strong and he did taking it 6-3. But Tseng was strong in the third set breaker and scored all 10 points on his way to victory.
Freshman Nico Sojka, playing at the No. 5, lost to Mikhail Esipov in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to finish the final completed match between the two schools.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles vs. USA/Carey): The Cajuns swept two USA's pairs and one Carey duo in their doubles matchup and they started it at No. 1 with the pairing of Dolan and freshman Pierce Gilheany taking down USA's Gingras and Fruh 6-2.
At No. 2 Libaud and sophomore Jamie Fraser played in the closest match between the two schools when they went to a tiebreaker against Di Lorto and Gonzalez but the Cajuns pair held the Jaguar pairing off to get the win 7-6 (10-8).
Finally, at the No. 3, Kramarov and Sojka took care of Carey's pairing of Chabaud and Hansson 6-4 to wrap up three doubles wins for the Cajuns.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles vs. UAB): Louisiana dropped two of three to UAB another doubles matchup played on the day. The lone win came in the No. 3 position when Kramarov and Sojka took their second win on the day together taking down Manchev and Paiste 6-3.
At No. 1, Gilheany and Dolan fell to Fourie and Parton in a tough fought match that finished with a score of 7-5, while Fraser and Libaud lost 6-3 to the UAB pairing of Goering and Safadito in the No. 2 position.
