Football: Cajuns Wrap Up Fall Camp With Scrimmage At STM

LAFAYETTE – Jordan Davis and Andre Nunez each directed scoring drives on offense while newcomer Julius Perkins had a sack and forced fumble on defense as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team wrapped up fall camp on Saturday with an 80-play, situational scrimmage at St. Thomas More High School.

Davis completed 10 of 15 passes for 182 yards and tossed a touchdown pass to Keenan Barnes for the Ragin' Cajuns offense while Trey Ragas, Jordan Wright, Raymond Calais and Elijah Mitchell each scored on rushing touchdowns.

"I thought our quarterbacks played well," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "Jordan (Davis) and Andre (Nunez) did a great job in directing the offense. Dion Ray was very effective in the run game, he took care of the ball and made some big plays.

We had some problems in the run game where we put the ball on the ground a couple of times. I didn't think they were pressing the hole early, but I was pleased with the play of Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas."

Nunez finished 6-for-10 for 72 yards while guiding the Ragin' Cajuns offense on a 98-yard drive that was culminated by a Calais rushing TD. Placekickers Stevie Artigue and Calvin Linden each converted on field goals for the special teams with Sam Geraci booting a pair of 50-yard punts during punting drills.

Kamar Greenhouse and Mustafa Mitchell each added sacks for the Ragin' Cajuns defense with Corey Turner and freshman Bralen Trahan each recovering a fumble. Trahan, an Acadiana High product, also added a forced fumble for the defense with Darrell Miller, Simeon Thomas, Kevon Perry and Levarious Varnado each recording a pass breakup.

"Defensively, I thought at times we flew around," said Hudspeth, "but we didn't tackle as well as we have in past scrimmages and we gave up a couple of big plays."

Louisiana will officially open its 2017 season on Sept. 2 against Southeastern Louisiana at Cajun Field. The Ragin' Cajuns will also play host to Sun Belt Conference opponents ULM (Sept. 23), Texas State (Oct. 12), New Mexico State (Nov. 18) and Georgia Southern (Nov. 25).

Season tickets are available by calling the Cajundome Ticket Office at (337) 265-2357 or on-line at RaginCajuns.com/tickets.
