Football: Ragin' Cajuns Don Full Pads For First Time In Fall Camp
LAFAYETTE – Head coach Mark Hudspeth put his team through a physical, 22-period workout on Thursday as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team practiced in full gear for the first time during fall camp.
The Ragin' Cajuns practiced inside the Moncla Practice Facility for the first time during camp, continuing to install their offensive and defensive packages while focusing on the inside running game.
"The first day in pads and you can tell that the camp grind is starting to set in," Hudspeth said. "Bodies are getting sore, but the practice flowed pretty good with the exception of a couple of situations towards the end."
The first day in full gear also gave the Ragin' Cajuns the chance to get a better evaluation on who would replace departed tight end Nick Byrne. With veteran players Matt Barnes and Carlos Robinson still nursing injuries, converted offensive tackle Raynard Ford, reserve tight end Chris Turner and a pair of true freshmen, Chase Rogers and Andre Landry, received the majority of snaps during team drills while standing out during the first Oklahoma drill of camp.
"We wanted to see who was physical and who could bring it," Hudspeth said. "Our tight ends were the most impressive during the middle drill. Chase (Rogers) and Andre (Landry), if they continue their development in the next few years, they'll be as good as we've ever had. Raynard got challenged after his first attempt (in the Oklahoma drill), but he came back with great pad level and showed that he could be the best tight end in this conference."
Looking to replace two-year starter Eddie Gordon at center, the Ragin' Cajuns have three players in camp – junior college transfer Kordell Brewster and returning players Cole Prudhomme and Ken Marks – vying to fill the void. Christian Cederquist, a native of Denmark who redshirted with the Ragin' Cajuns last season, is also in the mix at center while also competing for a backup role at guard.
"We've still got some things that are hampering us right now," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "Snaps have been an issue … we've got to clean those things up. We probably wasted about 10 to 12 snaps in practice today. We've got to clean those things up, but it's still early in camp."
The Ragin' Cajuns return to practice on Friday at 9:15 a.m., before conducting the first of three scrimmages during fall camp on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. All practices and scrimmages are open to RCAF and Quarterback Club members at the $1,000 level or above.
Louisiana will officially open its 2017 season on Sept. 2 against Southeastern Louisiana at Cajun Field. The Ragin' Cajuns will also play host to Sun Belt Conference opponents ULM (Sept. 23), Texas State (Oct. 12), New Mexico State (Nov. 18) and Georgia Southern (Nov. 25).
