Football: Cajuns Staying Hot Through Early Portion Of Fall Camp

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team held its second workout of fall camp, holding a 19-period practice in helmets on a hot, humid Monday morning at the Ragin' Cajuns Practice Facility.

The Ragin' Cajuns continued installation of its offensive and defensive packages, with the returning letterwinners staying ahead of the curve and the newcomers quickly picking up the respective schemes.

"I've got to give these kids props, it was a hot one today," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "And they brought as much energy today as they did (on Sunday). The part that I'm loving about this football team is their attitudes, the way they're coming to practice and the willingness to take hard coaching. We're in helmets and things will change when we put on pads, but we're really showing good team speed."

The second practice of fall camp gave the coaching staff opportunities to evaluate newcomers with a pair of junior college transfers – defensive back Koa Haynes and receiver Earnest Patterson – drawing early praise.

"He (Haynes) was a nice surprise and he hasn't really been out there long … I thought he showed up as a newcomer," Hudspeth said. "Earnest Patterson was another newcomer who showed up and made some plays today.

"But we have a lot of vets who are standing out right now. Our big three receivers (Keenan BarnesJa'Marcus Bradley and Michael Jacquet) and Ryheem Malone … those four guys, to me, could be as good as any four guys in the (Sun Belt) conference."

Louisiana will work out in shells beginning Tuesday at 9:15 a.m., before holding its annual Media Day at 1 p.m. Hudspeth, offensive coordinator Will Hall and defensive coordinator Mike Lucas will address the media with selected players also available.

The Ragin' Cajuns will work out in shells on Wednesday before practicing in full gear for the first time beginning on Thursday. The Ragin' Cajuns will conduct three scrimmages during fall camp with full scrimmages set for Aug. 12 and Aug. 19. All practices and scrimmages are open to RCAF and Quarterback Club members at the $1,000 level or above.

Louisiana will officially open its 2017 season on Sept. 2 against Southeastern Louisiana at Cajun Field. The Ragin' Cajuns will also play host to Sun Belt Conference opponents ULM (Sept. 23), Texas State (Oct. 12), New Mexico State (Nov. 18) and Georgia Southern (Nov. 25).

Season tickets are available by calling the Cajundome Ticket Office at (337) 265-2357 or on-line at RaginCajuns.com/tickets.
