Cajuns Golf Adds Two Signees To 2017-18 Squad
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team picked up two more signees for the 2017-18 season as head coach Theo Sliman announced the signing of Peter Hinnant (Winston Salem, N.C.) and Bjorn Gudjonsson (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) on Thursday.
"Very excited to add Peter and Bjorn to the class of 2018 joining the two signees from the fall," head coach Theo Sliman. "Both young men are the epitome of the type of student-athlete that we want to be a part of our program by excelling academically as well as athletically. I feel very strongly in the competitive nature that both of these young men bring. They both have posted multiple victories in their junior career, and are strong players that will only add to the depth of this squad."
The pair join Justin Caldwell (Ponchatoula, La.) and Colin Troxler (Luling, La.) as newcomers to the squad for the upcoming season.
Hinnant was selected for the 2016 NC All-State team by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Tarheel Youth Golf Foundation. Hinnant is a two-time winner of the Tarheel Golf Foundation Sedgefield Junior Amateur at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. and reached the No. 1 ranking among North Carolina boys in Tarheel Youth Golf.
A member of the Hurricane Golf Tour, Hinnant finished No. 4 on the tour in 2016. In 19 National Junior Scoreboard qualifying events in in the last two years, Hinnant posted seven Top 10 finishes including one win and four Top 5 performances.
Gudjonsson is ranked 2,790 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) seeing action in 15 qualifying events over the last three years. Gudjonsson was a member of the Icelandic Junior National Team in 2015 which competed at the European Boys Team Championship in Finland.
Since 2013, Gudjonsson has recorded five victories while carding 11 rounds under par including a career-best 61 at the Corny Championship in 2016.
"Bjorn has a lot of experience playing internationally and has already competed in a team atmosphere with the Icelandic Junior National Team," Sliman added. "We have had a long successful relationship with players from Iceland as Bjorn will be the 11th Icelandic player to wear the Ragin' Cajuns logo. That type of team experience he has is invaluable when it comes to translating to the college game. Peter has had a very successful junior career and I look for that success to carry over to the collegiate level. I expect both Bjorn and Peter to come in and compete for a spot in the lineup as freshmen as well as be a positive representation of our University on and off the golf course."
