Recruiting: Cajuns Announce Additions to 2017-18 Class
Volleyball - 4/20/2017
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot announced the addition of seven student-athletes to the program's 2017-18 recruiting class on Thursday.
The group includes four Louisiana natives, highlighted by Lafayette-area products Avery Breaux (Scott, La./St. Thomas More HS) and Lexi Hebert (Lafayette, La./Teurlings Catholic HS). Also hailing from Louisiana are Ana Williams (Baton Rouge, La./Zachary HS) and Milayne Danna (Slidell, La./Pope John Paul II Catholic HS).
Also joining the Ragin' Cajuns roster is Julia Angelo (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS), Laura Edwards (Marietta, Ga./Marietta HS) and Hannah Weber (Shawnee, Kan./Bishop Miege HS).
These additions increase Louisiana's 2017-18 recruiting class to eight. Hali Wisnoskie an outside hitter who graduated from Columbus (Texas) High School in December, was added to the roster in January after enrolling for the Spring 2017 semester.
Breaux served as the setter at STM and directed the Cougars to four consecutive district and state championships. She was named MVP of the All-State and All-Acadiana squads, and received MVP honors in the state title game during her junior season.
Breaux averaged nearly 20 assists per outing with 892 total assists during that junior campaign. She also had 84 kills, 37 aces, 33 digs and 33 blocks. Despite being slowed by injury during her senior season, she battled back to lead the Cougars to another state title and a second straight championship game MVP award.
Also a basketball standout at STM, Breaux was the only player to compete in both the volleyball and basketball All-Star games. She played club volleyball for Cajun Elite and Louisiana Volleyball Elite.
Hebert, like Breaux, was part of a championship tradition at Teurlings Catholic. She was a member of three straight Division III title teams and capped her career with Louisiana Division III Player of the Year honors.
She was MVP of the Rebels' 2016 state championship triumph after finishing with team-highs of 27 kills, six aces and 24 digs over the course of the tournament.
Hebert received district MVP honors as a junior following a 300-kill, 500-dig season and was an all-state selection her senior season. She played four seasons of club volleyball for Louisiana Volleyball.
Williams was a multi-faceted player for Zachary HS, competing at middle, outside, right side and defensive specialist. She was a three-time, first team all-district choice, was named to the Under Armour High School All-American Watch List in 2015 and 2016 and was named to the AVCA Phenom List in 2015.
Williams competed alongside Breaux and Hebert in club volleyball for Louisiana Volleyball, advancing to the AAU Girls' Junior National Volleyball in summer 2016.
In Danna, the Ragin' Cajuns add another setter to the roster. She's coming off a senior season in 2016 in which she accrued 1,187 assists as a member of a Pope John Paul squad that finished 45-2 and was ranked Top 25 nationally. She handed out 41 assists in the Louisiana Division IV state title game as the Jaguars won a third straight championship.
Danna was All-State for three years, All-District for four years and the MVP of the Division IV LHSAA State Championship Tournament her junior year.
Angelo was a decorated player for Tampa-area based Palm Harbor (Fla.) University. Over 197 career sets played, she compiled 696 kills, 657 digs, 53 aces, 84 blocks and was the team's leader in kills all three years.
She helped lead the Hurricanes to three district championships and three regional finals appearances. Angelo was the 2015 Pinellas County Player of the Year and 2016 All-Tampa second team member. She was listed on the 2015 and 2016 AVCA National Phenom List and 2016 Under Armour All-American Watch List.
Angelo finished with the most career kills by a player in Palm Harbor's history. She was coached by Dexter Rogers, an Olympic Team member (1993-96).
Edwards lettered for four years at Marietta High School playing at both the middle blocker and outside hitter position. She was a three-time all-area selection receiving first team honors in 2015 and second team honors in 2014 and 2016.
Weber played middle blocker for Bishop Miege High and both middle and right side for KC Power in club volleyball. She was an all-state tournament selection in 2015 and 2016, second team Kansas All-State honoree in 2015 and 2016 and second team Eastern Kansas League pick in 2015.
Weber totaled 513 kills over 286 career sets with Bishop Miege, highlighted by a career-best 218 kills as a junior. She registered a kill on 46.6 percent of her career attempts and recorded a .332 career hitting percentage. She was chosen to participate in the 2016 MoKan All-Star game.
As a member of the highly successful KC Power club team, Weber competed in the USA Nationals the past three seasons. The squad finished first in their region all three years and claimed fifth-place finishes at nationals in 2015 and 2016.
The 2017 season will mark the Ragin' Cajuns' 10th season under the guidance of Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot. Louisiana returns its kills leader (Stacey Reilly), starting setter (Jessica Bartczyszyn) and digs leader (Sydney Davis) from the 2016 season.
