Former Football: Heisman Trophy – Ever Won by a Former SLI, USL, UL Football Player? – Maybe Closer Than One Might Imagine

GEAUX, the Football game day program, has a list of the Ragin’ Cajuns on NFL Rosters, 1940 – Present. It lists almost 50 former gridiron greats who made successful moves to the NFL.  Further, the page includes Ragin’ Cajuns who appeared in the Super Bowl and also in the NFL Pro Bowl.

Christian “Keener” Cagle – SLI, Army, New York Giants (also played for the football Brooklyn Dodgers & was part owner).

Cagle was the College Player of the Year in 1934, his junior year at West Point, the year before the name of the trophy was changed to the Heisman Trophy.

It includes the Time Magazine Cover of Sept. 23, 1929 when he graced the cover and the monument of him at Cajun Field. 

 

John “Jack” Herron, Sr. may have played for the Dallas Texans before they became the Kansas City Chiefs. He left LSU to follow his coach who had become the new head coach at SLI.  Jack made All-America at SLI, then joined the NFL team. His status with them in 1952 could not be determined.
