Women’s Tennis: Ortega Claims Flight 5 Main Draw As Ragin Cajuns Finish At ULM Warhawk Classic

MONROE – Carla Ortega captured the main draw Flight 5 singles bracket while Alexandra Way and freshman Marina Garcia each reached the semifinals of their respective brackets to lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s tennis team at the ULM Warhawk Classic Tournament that concluded Saturday at the Raymond Heard Stadium.

Ortega, a native of Venezuela who prepped at Lafayette’s St. Thomas More High School, earned a win over Liza Aginskaya of Stephen F. Austin in the semifinals before rallying to defeat fellow UL India Shiaelis, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.

Way earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over ULM’s Patricia Villar in the quarterfinals of the Flight 3 main draw before dropping a 7-5, 6-2 decision to McNeese State’s Charoline Erlandson. Garcia, one of three freshman making their collegiate debut for the Ragin’ Cajuns, opened play in the Flight 4 main draw with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Vivian Borbely of McNeese State before falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Sonia Chen of Louisiana Tech, 6-2, 6-2.

Ortega and Shiaelis earned a 6-0 victory over Yasmin Taylor and Madina Vorotnikova of Southeastern Louisiana in the Flight C doubles draw before dropping a 6-2 decision to Louisiana Tech’s Alba Perny and Haley Ballinger in the finals.

Freshman Lucile Delabarre reached the finals of the Flight 4 back draw after defeating Perny, 6-1, 7-5, before falling in the championship to Natalie Duran of SLU, 6-3, 4-6, 3-10.

Louisiana will return to action when it plays host to the Ragin’ Cajuns Fall Classic, scheduled for Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Cajun Courts.
