Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball forward Mercedes Johnson was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference second team, as announced by the league office on Thursday morning.

Johnson is the first All-Sun Belt selection for the Cajuns since Alexis Green was a third team selection in the 2008-2009 season.

The Houston native is the highest All-SBC selection since Yolanda Jones was a first-team recipient in the 2006-2007 season.

In 27 games played, Johnson is averaging 14.3 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per contest. She joined the school’s 1,000 point club earlier this season following a 36-point effort against Troy on Jan. 5.

She has tallied double-digits in 21 of 27 contests played this season.

Johnson currently ranks sixth on UL’s all-time scoring list with 1,179 points. She is only 13 shy of reaching the top-5 in scoring.

Louisiana, the Sun Belt West No. 5 seed, will play the Sun Belt East No. 4 seed South Alabama on Saturday, March 5 in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Hot Springs, Ark. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Convention Center Court inside the Summit Arena.

Live video of the game will be available for a fee at SunBeltSports.org.
