Preliminary enrollment at Southwestern Louisiana Institute showed a surprising number of registrants: 2,775.

That was hundreds more than expected, President Joel T. Fletcher said, because local public high schools had recently added a 12th grade.

Those snapping pictures for athletic cards said that the early count showed far more men, 1,839, had enrolled than women, 454.
