NEW ORLEANS – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Indoor Track and Field duo of Frankie Griffin and Dominique Williams each claimed honors on Wednesday from the Sun Belt Conference after the league office announced its weekly track and field honors.
Griffin, a junior, was named the Sun Belt Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week while Williams, a senior, was named the Sun Belt Male Field Athlete of the Week.
Competing in the women’s high jump, Griffin cleared the bar at 5 feet, 8.75 inches to claim first-place honors at the FasTrak Collegiate Invitational last Saturday in Houston. The mark was the best in the Sun Belt Conference during the 2020 indoor season and currently ranks No. 30 on the NCAA Indoor Qualifying List.
Williams claimed weekly men’s honors after his personal-best throw of 67-5.5 in the men’s weight throw claimed first-place honors for the Ragin’ Cajuns. The former Lafayette High product moved into the No. 1 spot among Sun Belt Conference performers in the event, while his mark is the 25th-best throw on the NCAA Indoor Qualifying List.
The selection of Griffin and Williams in a vote by the league’s head coaches are the second and third by Ragin’ Cajuns athletes during the 2020 indoor season. Tahj Whitfield claimed Sun Belt Male Track Athlete honors on Jan. 15.
Louisiana will compete in a pair of events on Friday with a group headed to the McNeese Indoor in Lake Charles, with a group headed to the University of Houston Invitational at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
