Softball: Cajuns Win 22nd Consecutive Game, Finish Regular Season 40-11

MONROE, La. – Matte Haack went 4-for-4 at the plate and Shellie Landry drove in three runs as the Ragin’ Cajuns softball team defeated in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe by a score of 6-0 on Sunday, May 5 at the ULM Softball Complex in Monroe, La.  The win was the 22nd consecutive for the Cajuns and their 40th of the season to improve their record to 40-11 and 19-4 in Sun Belt games.

The 40th win marks the 15th consecutive season that the Cajuns have won 40-or-more games, and never once has a Lotief failed to win 40 games with the Cajuns.

Jordan Wallace picked up the complete game shutout for the Cajuns, striking out 12, while allowing two hits and walking two.  She came into the game with 290 strikeouts on the season and now has 302.  It is the first time a Cajuns pitcher has struck out 300 in a season since Ashley Brignac did so in 2008 when she fanned 327.

Similar to the games yesterday, the Cajuns took the lead with first inning runs, taking a 4-0 lead in the first.

Haack drove in Brianna Cherry with a single to open the scoring, and then stole second, forcing an error that scored Sarah Draheim to make it 2-0.

Shellie Landry drove-in Haack two pitches later with her 15th home run of the season.  The two-run shot added to her team and conference lead with 15 homers, and made it 4-0.

Cherry added to the lead in the second inning with her second homer of the weekend and 12th of the season.  It was a solo home run, and her 47th RBI of the season to give the Cajuns a 5-0 lead.

The score would hold steady for the next three innings, until Landry drove in her 3rd run of the day and 54th run of the season, taking back the conference lead for herself.

Haack, Cherry and Landry all had multi-hit games and at least one RBI for the Cajuns, combining to go 8-for-11 with four runs and five RBI.

With a Sun Belt Conference record of 19-4, the Cajuns are the third seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament.  They will take on sixth seeded Florida International in the first round, at 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 8 in Troy, Alabama.  The winner will take on the winner of No. 2 seeded South Alabama and the host, No. 7 seeded Troy.

The Sun Belt Tournament festivities open on Tuesday with Family Night at 6:45 at Troy University.  The first game of the tournament will start at 10 A.M. on Wednesday with No. 4 seed North Texas taking on No. 5 seed Florida Atlantic.
