Soccer: Schmidt Earns Second SBC Offensive Player of the Week Award

LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns freshman forward Annika Schmidt was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, after a stellar week that saw her score five goals in two matches, including a four-goal outburst against Prairie View A&M last Friday. It is her second time winning this award, winning it on Sept. 3 as well.
"I am very proud of, and happy for [Schmidt]," head coach Scot Wieland said. "She has made an amazing life adjustment this last month and a half. Player of the week twice and the most in program history is a fantastic accomplishment for any player, let alone a freshman. It is a great start to her college career, to say the least."
Schmidt’s five goals over the weekend have propelled her to a for the conference lead with nine goals and into a six-way tie for third in the nation.
She set a Louisiana record for goals in a match on Friday, notching her second-career hat-trick in just her ninth career match. She is the first player to ever score multiple hat-tricks at Louisiana.
She added a fifth goal on the weekend on Sunday, scoring the games second goal for her ninth of the season. She also has an assist on the season for 19 points.
The Nufringen, Germany native has already scored the second-most goals in a season and the third-most points in a season at Louisiana, and is on pace to set records in both.
The Cajuns will return to action this weekend when they travel to Houston to take on the University of Houston on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Louisiana will then open Sun Belt Conference play on Sept. 27 when it travels to Atlanta to take on newcomer Georgia State.
