NCSAA Release

LAFAYETTE, La. –
After leading the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns to their best finish in school history, junior Grace Howell-Harries and freshman Annika Schmidt were named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA All-South Region team, as announced by the NSCAA office.

Howell-Harries, the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year, was named to the South Region second-team, and Schmidt was named to the third team.

"These are the first players recognized regionally from our program," head coach Scot Wieland said of the duo.  "I am very proud of those two.  To get the regional recognition is fantastic and it is a great thing for the team as well."

Howell-Harries served as the team captain in 2013, and played in every minute of the season, scoring her first two career goals and added an assist.  The junior from London, Ontario, Canada earned first-team All-Sun Belt honors, and is a two-time All-Sun Belt selection, earning second-team honors as a freshman in 2011.

Schmidt was one of just eight freshmen to pick up all-region honors, after scoring 21 points in the first 10 games of the season.  She broke the school’s all-time record for points and goals in a season in the first ten games, only to see fellow freshman Yazmin Montoya break that record later in the season.  She also picked up All-Sun Belt second-team honors, finishing with 10 goals and three assists for 23 points.

"Not only is this an honor for Grace and Annika, but it is an honor for the team," Wieland added.  "Getting our school out there on the map with individual honors will only help us in the future."

After going 8-7-3 and finishing tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference, the Ragin’ Cajuns will return ten starters from 2013, including Howell-Harries and Schmidt, along with fellow All-Sun Belt selection, Montoya.
