Baseball Signs 14 To NLI For 2015 Season

 Jeff Schneider, November 15, 2013

Ten pitchers among new crop of Ragin’ Cajuns

Contact: Jeff Schneider

LAFAYETTE – The Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team signed 14 players to a national letter of intent for the 2015 season, head coach Tony Robichaux announced on Friday.

Louisiana signed Nolan Brown (Colleyville, Texas), Ty Ewart (Porter, Texas), Harrison Fife (Austin, Texas), Evan Guillory (Jennings, La.), Cole Jackson (Katy, Texas), Trey Jeans (Texarkana, Texas), Gunner Leger (Lake Charles, La.), Wyatt Marks (Lafayette, La.), Alex Shelton (Austin, Texas), Logan Stoelke (Fayetteville, Texas), Blaine Suehs (Caldwell, Texas), Joe Trahan (Rayne, La.), Stefan Trosclair (Sulphur, La.) and Orynn Veillon (Lafayette, La.).

"This is an important class," Robichaux said. "Our biggest goal was to find some guys that can replace the eight seniors and the players that we could possibly lose to the draft this year. I think with the potential draft picks we have on this team along with the seniors we realized that we needed to go out and try to fill these voids.

"The big thing is that you’re looking at a big void to fill with a lot of starters gone after this year. Hopefully these guys can come in and get weathered early, and make a contribution to the team right away."

Ten of the 14 players who signed with the Ragin’ Cajuns have the ability to toe the rubber for the Cajuns in the 2015 season.

"Our biggest concern is always pitching," Robichaux added. "It’s like the quarterback on the football team. You have to have good pitching. That’s where we started. After you take care of pitching then you come in and get a two-way guy like (Ryan) Wilson who can be versatile for you. We also got a couple good hitters that we feel can come in and perform right away, because we are going to be losing some good hitters."

Brown, a 6-foot centerfielder, comes from Blinn Junior College where he slugged .500 with 11 doubles and three home runs.

Robichaux on Brown:
"Brown is a very athletic outfielder who has a natural left-handed swing to go with a plus arm and can run very well. He can play all three spots in the outfield and will provide versatility to the lineup."

Ewart, a 5-10 left-handed pitcher and centerfielder hails from Porter High School where he was a 2013 Perfect Game Underclass Honorable Mention All-American. He also earned First Team All-District honors and was the Porter High School Athletic Student of the Year in 2013.

Robichaux on Ewart:
"Ty is a throwback type of player that competes and plays extremely hard. He has a good arm on the mound and is a great defender in the outfield. Ewart also competes at the plate and can make things happen for us on the base paths."

Fife, a 6-1 right-handed pitcher, plays at Lake Travis High School with fellow signee Alex Shelton. He is one of five players to sign with DI schools from Lake Travis and is rated the No.184 player to come out of Texas.

Robichaux on Fife:
"He is a very athletic pitcher who can command three pitches. He throws from a low three-quarter arm slot which can present a big problem for most hitters."

Guillory is a 6-3 right-handed pitcher from Jennings High School where he earned first team all-district honors after posting 97 strikeouts in 67 innings pitched. He had a 1.34 ERA and is rated in the top 1000 nationally and the 34th ranked player in Louisiana.

Robichaux on Guillory:
"Evan is a player we feel that has a very high ceiling. He has a projectable frame with a very athletic build. He has three legit pitches that he mixes in well."

Jackson, a 6-1 outfielder, joins the Cajuns from Seven Lakes High School where he is a three-year letterwinner. He hit .377 with four home runs and 26 RBIs this summer with the South Texas Sliders. Jackson ranks in the top 500 nationally and is the 153rd-rated player at his position and No.77 in Texas.

Robichaux on Jackson:
"Jackson is a good young hitter that has a great blend of speed and strength. His ability at the plate will give him an opportunity to compete and play right away. "

Jeans is a 6-foot left-handed pitcher from Pleasant Grove High School. He went 7-3 in 2013 with the Hawks, helping guide the squad to the state championship game. Jeans was tabbed a 2013 Perfect Game Underclass Honorable Mention All-American.

Robichaux on Jeans:
"Trey is a solid kid with plenty of room to grow. He has a very good arm action and can pitch to both sides of the plate."

Leger, a 6-3 left-handed pitcher and first baseman comes to Louisiana from Barbe High School where he has lettered four years and helped the Bucs win the 2012 Class 5A State Championship. Leger also is a wide receiver for Barbe and helped the football team reach the state championship game in 2012.

Robichaux on Leger:
"Gunner is a very physical left-handed pitcher with room to grow and fill out. He comes from a prestigious program and is a great competitor that is accustomed to winning. He has three good pitches and is also a skilled defender at first and can swing the stick at the plate."

Marks, a 6-3 right-handed pitcher and outfielder from St.Thomas More High School is rated No.306 nationally. He also ranks in the top 100 at his position and is the No.7 ranked player to come out of Louisiana. Marks was named to the LHSAA Class 4A All-State Team in 2013. He received 2013 first team all-district honors and was a Top Prospect at the Perfect Game National Showcase.

Robichaux on Marks:
"Marks has a physically imposing build with great athleticism. We feel like he has a very high ceiling with a fastball that is in the low 90s. He competes at high level and can make a big statement for us."

Shelton, a 6-4 right-handed hurler from Lake Travis joins teammate Harrison Fife to sign with the Cajuns. Shelton is ranked in the top 500 nationally, No.255 at the position and is the 72nd-rated player to come out of Texas.

Robichaux on Shelton:
"Alex has a strong arm and can run it up there in the low 90’s. He has three good pitches and his big, durable frame gives him a huge upside."

Stoelke, a 6-2 right-handed pitcher from Fayetteville High School helped guide the Lions to the 2012 state championship throwing a one-hitter in the championship game. He also pitched his AAU team to the 2013 Underclassmen National Championship.

Robichaux on Stoelke:
"Logan is a very athletic pitcher who has a high ceiling. He can touch 92 with his fastball and is a tough person to barrel up."

Suehs is a 6-foot right-handed pitcher that hails from Caldwell High School where he earned First Team All-Brazos County Honors. He received the Brazos Valley Distinguished Student Athlete Award in 2013.

Robichaux on Suehs:
"Suehs can command four pitches for strikes and has a fastball that reaches the low 90s. He also has a legit slider that he can throw anytime in the count, which makes a tough person to face."

Trahan, a 6-1 first baseman comes from Northside Christian where he was a three-time All-State selection and a two-time All-District MVP. Trahan was named one of the top LHSAA prospects by GeauxPreps.

Robichaux on Trahan:
"Joe is a big physical hitter that brings an imposing presence to the plate. Even though he is big physically, Trahan is very athletic and is a solid defender. We feel he has the potential to see at bats early in his career and hit for power."

Trosclair, a 6-3 infielder, was a mainstay for the NJCAA National Runner LSU-Eunice Bengals starting in all 62 games while hitting .348 with 59 RBIs. He also scored 58 runs and swiped 14 bases for LSU-E. Trosclair was an All-District selection for Sulphur High School in 2012.

Robichaux on Trosclair:
"Stefan is a hard-nosed infielder from one of the premier Juco’s in the country. He is very athletic and plays the game extremely hard. Trosclair is a guy that will compete for us at the plate and has a ton of upside."

Veillon, a 6-3 right-handed pitcher and outfielder is a three-year letterwinner for St. Thomas More High School. He hit .440 at the plate while going 1-1 with a 2.10 ERA for the Cougars in 2013. Veillon is a two-sport star for St. Thomas More earning two letters for the 2013 Class 4A state championship basketball team.

Robichaux on Veillon:
"Orynn is probably the best athlete in this class. He has tremendous upside as both a pitcher and outfielder. Orynn is a good runner and has good instincts in the outfield. On the mound, he is a player with solid delivery and has the potential to have three quality pitches."

"We feel like we are finished right now with this class," Robichaux mentioned. "Our coaching staff has done a great job. Assistant coaches Anthony Babineaux and Matt Deggs have done a huge job in going out and getting these guys. Also, coach Lance Harvell was key with the guys on campus. Because of the job they did, we feel like we are close to finishing. If anything we might go out and sign one more hitter if we do pick up anyone else.

"There is also the chance that we could lose a couple guys from this class to the draft. We will have to wait and see what happens with that, but at this point and time we feel really excited about the guys we are bringing in."

Cajuns Add Two New Orleans Standouts
Bryce Washington & Scott Plaisance Sign National Letters of Intent To Join Louisiana in 2014
LAFAYETTE, La. — With a pair of basketball wins already this year on the basketball hardwood, Louisiana head coach Bob Marlin picked up a pair of wins on the recruiting front on Wednesday when Scott Plaisance (New Orleans, La./Country Day) and Bryce Washington (New Orleans, La./St. Augustine) signed national letters of intent to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and play basketball beginning in the fall of 2014.
Plaisance and Washington both signed on Wednesday, the first day that high school student-athletes were allowed to sign letters of intent.
We are excited to go to the New Orleans area and add two quality players to the Ragin Cajuns program  like Bryce and Scott, Marlin said.  It was our goal in recruiting this year to increase the size of our lineup and we couldnt be happier that we found two players from two of the strongest programs in New Orleans.
Plaisance, a 6-9, 210-pound power froward from New Orleans, was named the Louisiana Class 1A Player of the Year after averaging 15.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game and leading Country Day High School to a 26-11 record and the state title.
In the state championship game, Plaisance capped a comeback from 20 points down when he hit a short jumper with seven seconds left to force overtime.  In OT, it was all Country Day as the Cajuns came away with a 60-54 win.
Plaisance was twice honored as the New Orleans Small School Player of the Week as a junior.
Plaisance, who is rated the No. 6 player in New Orleans on the latest Times-Picayune Super 16, comes from a basketball family.  His mother, DoBee Plaisaince, is in her sixth season as head women’s basketball coach at Nicholls State, and his sister, Theresa, earned first team All-SEC honors as a junior at LSU in 2012-13 and is a candidate for national player of the year honors this season.  He was coached at Country Day by Mike McGuire.
Coming from a basketball family, Scott knows the game, Marlin said.  He needs to add some weight to fill out his 6-9 frame, but he is an excellent runner and smart, tough player on the court.
Washington, a 6-6, 230-pound forward from New Orleans, earned first team all-district 10-4A honors last year after averaging 13.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, helping lead his team to a 25-10 record.
Ranked No. 13 on the Times-Picayune, he is coached at St. Augustine by Mitchell Johnson.
Bryce is a student of the game who has a solid grasp of the fundamentals of the game, Marlin said.  He sneaks up on opponents because he isnt real flashy and it isnt until you see the stats after the game that you notice all of the things that he does for his team.
The Ragin Cajuns (2-0) take to the road this week for the first time in 2013-14, playing games at Arkansas on Friday and Baylor on Sunday as part of a stretch that has them playing six of seven games on the road.

Women’s Basketball Signs Three for 2014 Class

Contact: Nick Ross

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball team has signed three student athletes for the 2014-15 school year, as announced by head coach Garry Brodhead on Wednesday.  Simone Fields (San Antonio, Texas/Judson HS), Alexis Nezianya (Carrolton, Texas/Newman Smith HS) and Cienna Rodriguez-Rivera (Cypress, Texas/Cy Ranch HS), have all signed a National Letter of Intent and will be joining the Ragin’ Cajuns for the 2014-15 season.

“The most impressive quality in the Class of 2014 is there character and work ethic,” Brodhead said.  “We are extremely excited for the community to get to know these very special young ladies. Not only are they talented on the court but off the court, they bring everything we want for our players to bring to the University and more. I’m very proud of our staff and how hard they worked for this recruiting class.“

Fields, a 6-0, forward from San Antonio, Texas, averaged 10.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals, and was named to the 25-5A all-district team as a junior.  She was also named all-region first team and all-district first team as a sophomore.

Fields played her travel ball in the summer with the Austin-based TeamXpress, the same team that produced current Cajuns forward Jasmin Mills, and was coached by Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil, a two time national player of the year at Texas.

“Simone will give us some much needed size to our program,” Brodhead said.  “At the post she reminds me of our own Jasmin Mills. She has the ability to score in the paint, with an array of different inside moves, she has great hands and is very agile. On the defense side we feel she will become a main stay in the paint for us in the future as well as a great rebounder.”

Nezianya, a 5-11 forward averaged 10.9 points and 7.7 rebounds at Newman Smith, and earned all-district  hoops honors, as well as volleyball honors.   She was named to the 2014 “Players to Watch List” by Premier Basketball Media, a high school basketball scouting service.
