Newman’s Goal Helps Cajuns Edge McNeese State, 2-1

Cajuns win third straight match; will head to Mississippi State on Sunday

LAFAYETTE – Natalie Newman scored a goal in the 86th minute to give the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns a 2-1 win over McNeese State on Friday evening at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.

Newman, who scored her second goal of the season, took a pass from Lindsay Brammer immediately following a McNeese State (3-2) equalizing goal by Savannah LaRicci off an assist from Taylor Trent.

Louisiana (4-3), which won its third straight match overall and fourth straight against the Cowgirls, took an early lead in the 28th minute on a goal from senior Mackenzie Higgins. The senior took a pass from Yazmin Montoya in the right corner of the box and fired past MSU goalkeeper Annie Bravenec into the upper left corner of the goal for her Sun Belt Conference leading seventh goal of the season.

After LaRicci tied the match with a goal from the top of the box at the 84:59 mark, Louisiana needed 34 seconds to take the lead for good. Newman took a pass from Brammer down the right sideline and fired past Bravenec for her first game-winning goal of her career.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cosette Morche had two saves in goal for the Ragin’ Cajuns, who held a 16-5 advantage in shots with eight shots on goal. Bravenec had six saves for the Cowgirls, who dropped their second straight match after opening the season with wins over Louisiana Tech, Texas State and Southern.

Louisiana will face Mississippi State (4-2) on Sunday, Sept. 11 in a 1 p.m. match at the MSU Soccer Complex. The match can be seen on SEC Network Plus.
