That’s a lesson the UL athletic department learned about seven years ago following the renovation of the athletic administration building on Reinhardt Drive.

While the training room, equipment room, dressing room and weight rooms were all made larger and nicer than ever before, the expansion in those areas eliminated the meeting rooms that previously existed.

That created the need for more progress. Over time with numerous donations from the community, that need was also met.

On Monday morning, a ceremony was held to officially name the newly constructed facility.

From now on, the area will be called the "Bob Fournet Recruiting Zone," which will be utilized for current players and coaches to meet, as well as entertain future recruits.

"It was absolutely essential," UL Athletic Development Director Gerald Hebert said. "The renovation of the athletic administration building was great, but it eliminated all the meeting space. There was literally no place for anyone to meet.

"It took the donations and hard work of so many people to make this a reality."

Sons of the late Bob Fournet — Jacques and Henri — unveiled the new sign after contributing $150,000 to the athletic department for the naming rights.

The facility includes two redesigned, air-conditioned double-wide trailers that provide four large meeting rooms, as well as a covered outdoor pavilion for meetings, cooking or entertainment options when hosting recruits.

"It’s very nice," said Hebert, who said the area is primarily for football, but will also be available for other sports as well. "This is an area that’s going to be valuable for a long time."

Always looking at the future, Hebert also discussed that the Bob Fournet Recruiting Zone is just the latest upgrade in the Cajuns’ football program, but certainly not the last.

"We’re going to have a total renovation of the football stadium," he said. "The plans are drawn up. We’re doing studies right now on how to raise that money and make that happen.

"But even after that takes place, this (recruiting zone) is still going to be very useful to us."
