Houston Area Cajuns To Take Part In 12th Annual Athletic Fund RaiserBrian McCann, UL Sports Information Director, October 15, 2013 ![]()
Event to be played on two courses in 2013; expands to three beginning in ’14 HOUSTON – Fans of Ragin’ Cajuns Athletics from all-around the Houston area will get together to raise money for both the Louisiana golf and track and field programs on Wednesday (Oct. 16) when the 12th annual Athletic Fund Raiser Golf Tournament is held on the Lakes Golf Course at Clubs of Kingwood. The tournament, which is run in cooperation with the RCAF, has raised $420,000 during its first 11 years. In past years, baseball, softball and track and field have benefited from the event. This year’s event, which is sold out, will be played on two golf courses for the second consecutive year with an additional course being added for the 2014 event. Lunch and check-in starts at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start slated for 1 p.m. "This golf tournament is another example of how Ragin Cajun fans have come together to make Louisiana athletics better," Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said. "This group met 12 years ago with the purpose of doing something to help the school that they all love so much. Since that first meeting, they have developed an event that is unrivaled in the southwest, one that has benefited countless Ragin’ Cajuns student-athletes." "The concept of choosing a different sport to support each year also makes it unique. There are no words to adequately describe how truly special this event is or how much it has meant to our program over the years. Our student-athletes and coaches thank everyone involved for their incredible generosity." The Athletic Fund Raiser Golf Tournament was started 12 years ago by Louisiana golf alums Chad Williams, Sid Labbe, David "Redbird" Faherty, and Louisiana Cheerleader alumnus Michael Patin. Over the history of the event, the Athletic Fund Raiser Golf Tournament has raised over $400,000 in donations given to the UL Athletics Department to help fund various spring sports. "This is just a great way for us to give back to Louisiana Athletics for everything the school has done for us," said Patin, a member of the Athletic Fund Raiser Golf Tournament steering committee. "We hope to be able to keep this event going for years and years to come. To us, being able to bring together a group of Ragin’ Cajuns while raising funds for Louisiana athletics is a win-win situation."
