Golf: Chip Shots – Garon at U.S. AmateurDan McDonald, Daily Advertiser, August 14, 2013 Chip ShotsGARON AT U.S. AMATEUR: Former UL standout Brandt Garon of Baton Rouge was unable to advance out of the medal-play round Monday and Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur Championship, and did not move into the match-play round of 64 that begins today at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Garon opened with a 78 in Monday’s opening round, but rallied back after a slow start to play even-par over Tuesday’s final 13 holes including two birdies in his last six holes. But his four-over 74 left him at 152 for two days, well back in the field of 312 golfers that competed for those 64 match-play positions. Garon, who wrapped up his Cajun career last spring with All-Sun Belt Conference honors and recently won the Baton Rouge Open, had earned a spot in the national meet at a USGA Amateur sectional qualifier held in July at TPC Louisiana. He posted a one-over 143 score there to claim one of the two spots awarded out of a field of more than 30 playes. A total of 7,002 players attempted to qualify nationally for the Amateur, with Garon making the final 312. Above are exerpts from Dan’s weekly story:
