Obituary: William Lowry – Football 50 & 51, S Club Member, Univeristy Supporter – July 10, 2011William Lowry
LAFAYETTE – Bill Lowry, beloved husband, father and Granddaddy to all, passed away in the early morning hours on Sunday, July 10, 2011, from complications of a stroke. Born to Lou and Mella Lowry in Memphis, Tennessee in 1929, he came to Lafayette with an athletic scholarship from S.L.I, where he lettered in football. After graduation, he became a pilot in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Captain. In 1955, he married Mary Elizabeth Jeanmard, whom he met at S.L.I., and they soon began their family. After leaving the Corps, they moved back to Lafayette where Bill began his career in the oilfield services industry. In 1981, Bill and Betty purchased a Kwik-Kopy Printing franchise which, through their diligence and hard work of the family members, now flourishes as Lowry’s Printing and Copying. "Peanuts" was a member of the UL Alumni Association and the UL Ragin’ Cajuns Lettermen Club. He was also a charter season ticket holder of the New Orleans Saints and past member of the Lafayette Airport Commission. He will be greatly missed by his beloved Betty and their five children: Mella Lowry Viera and her husband, Raul; MaryBeth Lowry; Louie Lowry and his wife, Kathy; Claire Lowry and her partner, Melodi Marchiafava; and David Lowry and his wife, Brenda. Surviving also are his sister Mary Catherine Gentry and her family, of Clinton, Mississippi, and his brother Pat Lowry and his family, of Houston, Texas. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren: Angel Citron Myers, Raul Viera, Jr., Elizabeth Viera, Jeffrey Lowry, Bridget Lowry, Margaret McElligott Casey, Stephanie McElligott Marine, Bill Howard McElligott, Jr., Allison McElligott, Ian Lowry and Julia Lowry, as well as four great-grandchildren, Jeanne and William Myers, and Colin and Patrick Casey. A remembrance of Bill’s full and happy life will take place Wednesday, July 13 at 2:00 pm at Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 12, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Wednesday, July 13, 11:00 am until time of service.
